I saw few clouds and dreaded that I would, I must, pedal my ass
off (only mountain bikers and construction workers know what
it feels like to pray for bad weather to lounge in). I knew I
was going to miss the talking heads who would tell
me what was going on in the world.
It was Sunday, Easter Sunday for the unorthadox, and I am
definately the unorthadox. I gulped down a coffee (the pot has
been running cold for some time now) and I dressed in the racing
Lycras thinking of the ressurection in an abstract manner.
I thought of raising from the dead, and conquering cancer,
and marrying Canadians, and all those impossible
things that life throws us every now and then.
The Bone Breaker Run, is the inaugaration run into the Grateful
Tread, Carolina Chapter. It is a 25 mile run without touching
asphalt using highway access land along a stretch of road that
was used by the Grateful Dead on their 1981 Tour of the Dixie
Circuit. To even take the Bone Breaker Run, you must have 25
miles accumulated with a memeber of the tread along this trial.
Without the Bone Breaker, you are not a member of the Tread.
It was only a 25 mile run... surely I could do that. Yet it was
more... it was my inauguration into the "Tread". It was
25 miles along the "highway access" to 490. Once dressed,
I opened the sliding door from the bedroom and rolled the
bike out. Like all serious riders, I consider my bike an
extension of myself, and I do not let it sleep outdoors.
I feel the pangs when I must on occasion chain it to something
while I conduct business or sleep (only a cyclist knows
what I am talking about).
I did my 25 mile Bone Breaker Run on April 4, 1999, and am now a
signed member of the Grateful Tread Mtn. Bike Club and proud owner of the
patch to prove it.

My First Real Run
The day started with a coffee, and a look out the window.
I always trust my view of the weather better then Ken Bostic's.
I have always suspected that local grocery stores pay him to
report inclement weather.
