Cal Ripken
Long before they constructed Camden Yards, Cal Ripken punched into work every day. He still does. Not just because he's outlasted everyone. He's outclassed everyone, on and off the field.
With all the glitz surrounding today's ballplayers -- most of whom are known more for selling sneakers, underwear, drinks, and electronics than hitting baseballs -- how ironic that Ripken, the soft-spoken workhorse, has become Major League Baseball's glimmer of hope in an era of hotshots, a guy who has been around long enough to remember when players just played and didn't vend merchandise.
That is the beauty of Ripken. He is the consummate "old-school" player, a thinking man who works his butt off and keeps his mouth shut. In short, he is a perfect baseball player -- patient, fundamentally sound, a guy who uses his brain more than his brawn.
